What is pilling?

Pilling (or fuzzballs) are those little balls that form on a knitted fabric due to use. Sometimes these fuzzballs are called pillballs as they resemble a small medicine pill.

Why does pilling happen?
In all napped fabrics, fibers of different lengths protrude above the fabrics. These fibers impart a soft fluffy “hand” to the fabrics. Some of these fibers are longer than others, as illustrated below.

The napped fabric, when rubbed either against itself or other objects, will cause the longer fibers to interlock or knot, and form small fuzz-balls.

How does the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb work?
The D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater and Fabric Comb will catch these fuzz balls and brush them from the fabric. After a few removals of this matting, pilling, or fuzz balls, the longer fibers will all have been leveled - at this time the fabric will have fibers of virtually equal length protruding. The shorter, equal length fibers do not have a tendency to pill, and the fabric will then be almost pill proof.

Which fabrics/fibers pill?
Lots of fibers pill! Originally, the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb was intended for use on wool, cashmere and acrylic garments. However, we have discovered that it works on many more types of fibers.

People use the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb on blankets, needlepoint (removes loose threads) and lots of other ways (including removing cat/dog hair). If you have discovered another use for it, let us know. We love hearing your stories!

Generally, the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb is less suitable for use on cotton as cotton is soft but not fuzzy! Of course, as with all garment care, try the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb on the inside or unobtrusive area before using it on the whole garment.

Does pilling mean the fabric isn’t a good quality?
Not at all! Many of the finest fabrics in the world pill. It is a part of the natural process of wearing a luxurious knit garment.

Isn't there a battery-operated pilling remover?
Yes, there is. However, we are biased in favor of the D-Fuzz-ItŪ Sweater/Fabric Comb. Maybe because it is smaller, lighterweight, doesn't require batteries and is less expensive. Or maybe we like it better because it works better - according to our own experience and unsolicited testimonials!
